Intent

We aim to teach an ambitious MFL curriculum that develops children’s interest in, and curiosity about, learning other languages. We teach a coherently-planned and sequenced curriculum that is fun and engaging for children of all abilities. We want children to be aware that language has a structure and that the structure differs from one language to another. We want to help to develop children’s awareness of, and respect for, cultural differences in other countries. We aim to lay the foundations for future language learning, with children leaving our school as skilled, confident and enthusiastic language learners.

Implementation

Miss Wood leads the teaching of French in school for Years 3 to 6 with a weekly 30 minute session. Teachers create a positive attitude to French learning within their classrooms. Teachers reinforce the expectation that all pupils are capable of achieving high standards in French. French is taught using La Jolie Ronde scheme of work, which focuses on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum. At Bader, we have high expectations in every lesson and we teach exciting lessons which include opportunities for modelling and repeating. The learning of French at Bader is built upon each lesson by recapping on previous learning and practising previously learned skills. Children experience language learning techniques and become accustomed to listening to another language within their French lessons. We build upon the knowledge and skill development of the previous years. Children have opportunities to record themselves using Seesaw and use peer support to improve their pronunciation and intonation.

Impact

In French at Bader Primary School, children will have listened to language carefully, and be able to speak French with increased confidence. Children will have the ability to pronounce vocabulary accurately. Children will ask questions about the French language and culture therefore increasing their understanding of the world whilst developing positive attitudes.
This will be seen through:

• Observing and interacting with children’s conversations;
• Evaluation of written work;
• Discussions with pupils about French.
