Religion and World Views
Intent
‘Differences were meant not to divide but to enrich’
J. H. Oldham
At Bader, through the teaching of a well-sequenced, ambitious Religion & Worldviews curriculum, we aim to give every child the knowledge and understanding of religious & non-religious views worldwide and the impact they have. We aspire to provide children with an awareness of the religions in our local community and the understanding of how to be respectful towards religious denominations. Religion & Worldviews at Bader promotes moral development and the respect for different cultures and beliefs and encourages the children to become determined learners.
Implementation
Teaching of Religion and Worldviews in Early Years:
In Early Years, Religion and Worldviews is covered in the understanding of the world area of the curriculum. Pupils look at similarities and differences between themselves and others and among families, communities and traditions.
Teaching of Religion and Worldviews in KS1 and KS2:
Our Religion and Worldviews curriculum is carefully sequenced to be progressive across Key Stage 1 and 2. Following the Stockton Sacre, lessons are organised to create a wealth of knowledge and understanding of different religions. Pupils are encouraged to ask questions, discuss and compare religions. Our children generate an awareness and respect for different religions, thoughts and beliefs.
Our pupils are given the opportunity to visit places of worship to gain a first hand experience and understanding of religious buildings and artefacts. Resources including artefacts, books and videos are used to enhance the teaching and learning of Religion and Worldviews.
Impact
At Bader Primary School, Religion & Worldviews Studies promotes the spiritual, moral and cultural development of children. It helps to prepare them for the experiences and responsibilities of life, and helps to develop an understanding of the world in which we live. Religion and Worldviews Studies helps pupils to grow in understanding of their world, to make connections and be empowered by their understanding. Monitoring is used throughout the academic year, to gauge the impact of the curriculum design across school.
Learning is measured through analysis of pupils` acquisition of knowledge, understanding, and the application of skills across topics. This includes making connections among different religions, beliefs, values and traditions.
We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
- A big question where children are able to articulate key ideas from their learning and make connections
- Pupil Voice and discussions
- Artefacts which engage and support children’s learning
- Visits to places of worship, and visitors from faith groups in school to provide quality, memorable and worthwhile experiences to enrich learning
